Dunfermline Learning Campus: Fife College

Setting a New Benchmark for Sustainable Education

The new Fife College campus is a trailblazing project, serving as the first tertiary education facility in Scotland designed to the Scottish Government’s Net Zero Public Sector Buildings Standard. Part of the innovative Dunfermline Learning Campus, this 20,000m² facility provides state-of-the-art learning spaces for over 4,500 students and staff.

Working alongside MMM Joinery for main contractor Balfour Beatty, DorSuite was selected to provide a comprehensive, fully certified, high-performance doorset and ironmongery solution that aligned with the architect's vision for a collaborative, "pathway-driven" learning environment.

The Challenge

The Dunfermline Learning Campus required a doorset solution that could balance three critical pillars: increased durability for high-traffic educational use, strict adherence to fire safety regulations (up to FD120), and a commitment to low-carbon construction.

Architects Reiach and Hall designed the building around a shared central atrium and civic courtyard to encourage interaction. The doorsets needed to support this open, connected feel while meeting the technical demands of a facility that bridges the gap between secondary school, further education, and business training.

The DorSuite Solution

DorSuite manufactured and supplied 380 high-performance doorsets featuring specialised stile and rail cores. This construction method was chosen for its superior dimensional stability and longevity, ensuring the doors can withstand the daily rigours of a busy college campus.

  • High-Performance Engineering: The package included a complex mixture of fire ratings to meet the building's safety strategy, ranging from Non-Fire Rated (NFR) to FD60 and FD120. Achieving a 2-hour fire rating (FD120) while maintaining aesthetic consistency across the learning environment was a key technical success of the project.

  • Distinct Ironmongery: To complement the doorsets, DorSuite supplied a fully integrated ironmongery package valued at £97,000. We utilised our own Distinct range of ironmongery, providing a cohesive, high-quality finish across the campus. By supplying both the doors and the hardware as a fully certified single-source package, we ensured seamless compatibility and guaranteed long-term operational reliability for the end users.

The Outcome

By integrating carbon-conscious manufacturing with high-specification engineering, DorSuite helped deliver a facility that establishes a new low-carbon benchmark for Scottish education. The 380 doorsets and bespoke ironmongery provide the durability required for a 4,500-strong student body, while ensuring the highest levels of fire protection and accessibility.

Looking Forward

This project showcases DorSuite’s ability to handle large-scale, technically demanding education projects and as Fife College opens its doors to the next generation of learners, our products stand as a testament to quality, safety, and the future of Net Zero construction in the UK.
