Protecting Those Who Protect: Why The MOD Trusts DorSuite for Fire Safety

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) required a complete fire door upgrade for all Major Garrisons covering Aldershot and the Salisbury Plain area. (Project Allenby/Connaught is a 35-year, multibillion-pound Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contract by the UK Ministry of Defence, delivered by Aspire defence Limited in conjunction with IMS Group, alongside the Defence Infrastructure Organisation. It modernizes living and working quarters for nearly 18,700 soldiers across Aldershot and Salisbury Plain) They required a solution that would protect not only personnel but critical military assets, including armoured vehicles, tanks, simulation equipment and computer systems.

The primary duty of care is for the safety of service members living, working, and training on base. This is compounded by the need to protect hundreds of millions of pounds worth of military assets, and manage hazardous environments including fuel stores.

All of this is set against a backdrop of diverse application areas, from the impressive traditional architecture of the Officers' Mess to the high-traffic, industrial-grade needs of the tank sheds.

DorSuite focused on the human element: how doors were used daily by personnel in heavy boots and equipment, the need for automated hardware during emergencies, and how environmental factors like vehicle exhaust and fuel vapours would impact performance in the mechanical service areas.

Based on this human-centric approach, DorSuite developed a bespoke fire door system with three key pillars:

• Military-Grade Durability: Reinforced door frames and corrosion-resistant hardware are designed to withstand the daily impact of heavy military equipment and constant use. Heavy-duty hinges ensure the doors will perform reliably under the demanding conditions of a busy military base.

• Enhanced Fire Performance: Doors are built with a 60-minute fire and smoke rating to provide increased evacuation time and improved compartmentalisation.

• Integrated Security: All doors are made compatible with the MOD’s existing access control systems. Robust hardware and emergency override capabilities are also built in to meet stringent security classification requirements and support rapid response scenarios.

• Aesthetic and Functional Integration: In areas like the Officers' Mess, where traditional military architecture is a priority, a simple, one-size-fits-all approach was not an option. Here, DorSuite replaced existing non-compliant doors with new, fully compliant fire doorsets that were designed to match the existing aesthetics of the building.
