Reviving History: DorSuite's Role in Rosebank's Restoration

Rosebank, a distinguished name in Scottish whisky, reopened in 2021 after almost three decades of closure. Located on the banks of the Forth and Clyde Canal, this historic distillery had lain dormant since 1993. The new owners were dedicated to reviving Rosebank while safeguarding its historical integrity, transforming the site into a modern visitor attraction that maintained its unique character and rich heritage.

The Challenge

Restoring Rosebank posed a distinctive challenge: balancing the need for modernisation with the preservation of its historical essence. The aim was to revitalise the distillery into a functional, contemporary space while respecting its original architecture. DorSuite was tasked with supplying bespoke doorsets that complemented both the traditional and modern elements of the project, all while adhering to stringent safety and design standards. Adding to the complexity, the work needed to be completed within a tight deadline.

DorSuite's Solution

DorSuite played a crucial role in ensuring the success of the Rosebank project. Working in close collaboration with ISG Construction and Michael Laird Architects, DorSuite delivered 83 custom-made timber doorsets. These doors, with fire-resistance ratings ranging from FD30s to FD120s, ensured safety and compliance, without compromising on the visual appeal.

Of the 83 doorsets, 46 were finished with Armolam Laminate, providing a robust and contemporary aesthetic. The remaining 37 doors were Ash-Veneered Lacquered with Loose-Stop Design Solid Ash Frames, adding a traditional touch that matched the distillery’s historic look.

Time constraints added pressure to the project, with the doors needed within just six weeks. Despite this, DorSuite worked efficiently to address any compliance gaps, ensuring all regulatory requirements were met and successfully provided fully certified doorsets that were delivered on time, ready for installation.

Additionally, the project involved the implementation of a complex access control system. DorSuite coordinated with the main contractor and M&E contractor to integrate the access control mechanisms, particularly for the fully glazed doors where concealed access control was required to maintain the clean, modern look.

The Outcome

The reopening of Rosebank Distillery marked the successful revival of a historic landmark, blending the old with the new. DorSuite’s bespoke doorsets contributed significantly to the overall feel of the space, providing both functional and aesthetic value. Their technical expertise and attention to detail helped create a welcoming, secure environment that pays homage to the distillery’s past while catering to the demands of modern use.

Industry Trends

The Rosebank project highlights key trends in the hospitality sector, particularly the growing focus on sustainability and the preservation of heritage sites. With increasing interest in responsible tourism, many businesses are looking to restore historic buildings, offering visitors unique, authentic experiences. By blending historical preservation with modern innovation, projects like Rosebank are setting new standards for the industry.
